Marathon Mile By Mile - St. Petersburg Distance Classic

Clearwater Marathon Mile By Mile

Mile 1
Start line is on Clearwater’s waterfront, heading through downtown, up and over the majestic Clearwater Bridge, and west across Clearwater Memorial Causeway, which is flat, straight and manicured. It could very well be one of the most beautiful first two miles of any marathon, anywhere.

Mile 2
The tour through Clearwater Beach includes the recently renovated and newly landscaped “Beach Walk” leading athletes along Clearwater’s public beach, recognized as the best city beach in the gulf region, stretching from Florida to Texas. “We’re #1! . . . We’re #1! . . .”

Miles 3 – 4
The second significant hill on the entire course, Clearwater Pass Bridge rises about 75 feet over the inlet. The good news is that it’s early in the race, the view is breathtaking and the sun should be rising over the bay off to the east. More good news – after the bridge, it’s totally flat for the next 8+ miles, as you head south through the high rise Clearwater condo canyons.

Miles 5 – 6
Check out some of the most exclusive real estate in the county as you pass by the million dollar mansions of Belleair Beach and Belleair Shore.

Miles 7 – 9
An enjoyable mix of residential and commercial areas in Indian Rocks Beach, consisting of low-rise homes, condos, shops and restaurants.

Miles 10 – 12
On your left, “the Narrows,” the intracoastal waterway at one of its narrowest points. Combination of weekend getaways, homes and restaurants.

Miles 13 -16
The course turns inland over the Park Boulevard Bridge (a 25 feet bridge over the intracoastal), staying on Park Blvd. until Old Oakhurst Road, turning south to Oakhurst Road, which provides a taste of “old Florida” – a rustic, tree-canopied two lane road leading to the Pinellas Trail.

Miles 17 – 24
Pinellas Trail is the longest (43 miles) “rails-to-trails” linear park in the country, cruising through Seminole, Largo and into Clearwater. It is perfectly flat, except for three overpasses (each 20 – 25 feet high), and extremely smooth. By the way, the Pinellas Trail was recently recognized as one of the ten best places in the country to roller blade, due to its high grade asphalt, and its seclusion from vehicular traffic.

Miles 25 – 26
The last few miles will tour through one of Clearwater’s earliest established neighborhoods, with beautiful golf courses on one side and stunning homes on the other.

Finish Line
The long journey finishes with a corkscrew trek down to the bay level and back to the finish line at Coachman Park. Time to relax with family, friends, food, beverages and live entertainment. CONGRATULATIONS!
